General cartographic resources

The WWW Virtual Library has an Earth Science page which includes a link for Cartography History which has lots of useful information and a huge collection of links. Many of his recommendations for map sites are generally good suggestions for anylarge data collection site.

Automatic maps

There are quite a number of sites on the Web that will generate maps of various kinds (although none generate me :-):

Xerox Parc had one of the first, but I think it's completely gone now. That's a considerable pity, because it had a number of features I liked.
Another one called MapsOnUs was also good, one of the first to do street addresses and driving directions. But, it now redirects to a completely unrelated site.
I usually use Google Maps for most of my mapping.
Map Quest is also a good (apparently) site for this.
National Geographic has a section on their site for maps.
FreeTrip.com does route planning with really nice detailed descriptions, but I failed to actually get a map out of it...
The distance server can compute the great circle distance between two locations. But it says it uses the (now defunct, see above) Xerox Map server for maps and I didn't get an option for one.
The Earth and Moon Viewer shows images of the earth with the day/night distinction showing illumination on the night side.
